Synopsis
Cast
One night, a man is woken by the sound of an air raid siren in a house in the country. He has already heard that sound before in Belgrade in the spring of ‘99, when the city was bombed by aircraft that had taken off from Italy. His mother also recognises the same siren, which she heard before bombing of Naples. That night they sit at the kitchen table talking about fried eggs and wars, about a weak heart and a travel diary with a red cover. It is a sleepless night, but one of mutual understanding. At dawn a pane of glass is enough to divide them again.

Erri De Luca

Director’s notes

A son, a mother, the kitchen of a house in the country with a fire alight on the hearth, a pack of cards, a bottle of water … During the night, the son already “grown up” and his mother, “once again” go back over their most recent and long-past memories. Suddenly the illusion (or perhaps the certainty?) appears with the transparency of the dawn light “on the other side of the glass”, that life can still give us moments of real warmth, despite the relentless passage of time, symbolically marked by the fire slowly dying down in the hearth of the house. It is hard to convey strong “emotions” with a short film: I have tried to do so, also aided by an intense performance by Isa Danieli, a highly experienced film and theatre actress, not to mention Erri De Luca’s first time in a leading role in which, moreover, in more than one scene he acted using only his body, hands, face and his deep blue eyes. I attempted, with all the creativity that I could summon, to put myself at the service of Erri’s feelings, giving shape to his very close relationship with his mother, who died two years ago, but also heartened by sincere friendship over the past fifteen years.
